Steve Jobs: Movie Stars, Filmmakers React To His Death

Steve Jobs, who died at 56 on Wednesday (October 5), was not just the visionary behind Apple and its groundbreaking technology, but also a leading force at Pixar, the Oscar-winning animation studio responsible for films like "Toy Story," "Finding Nemo," "Up" and more. His contributions to movies, both in terms of story and the way [...]

There's something about the subject of gangsters that never gets old. Particularly the Hollywood variety, as depicted in films like "The Departed," "Get Shorty," "Snatch," "Donnie Brasco," HBO's "The Sopranos," and of course "The Godfather." They're all so cool, slick, watchable. It's that iconic allure that had us excited for Ruben Fleischer's next flick, "Gangster Squad," the moment it was announced.

The film is based on the L.A. Times' seven-part series, "Tales From The Gangster Squad," by writer Paul Lieberman, which revolved around the LAPD's war on infamous mobster Mickey Cohen. Heavy-hitter Sean Penn will play Cohen, and Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling will play two of the cops who try to bring him down, and always likable Emma Stone is in the mix as a sassy "siren" caught in a love triangle with Gosling's character and one of the gangsters.

Another familiar face in the cast is Anthony Mackie, who couldn't tell us much about his role in the film, but promised we won't be disappointed. We asked Mackie for his thoughts on Gosling's big year, as well as what might play out between the two actors onscreen.

"Ryan has been a friend of mine for a long time, since 'Half Nelson,' I’m glad he’s finally in a position where he’s getting his just due because he is really one of the most talented actors of his generation," Mackie told us at the "Real Steel" premiere. "'Gangster Squad' is just a bunch of great guys. Ruben is a great director and the story is kind of funky and it’s a part of LA history that a lot of people don’t know. It’s going to be a cool movie."
